Sitting down for long periods of time is a part of life, but it can also be extremely painful. Whether you’re sitting at your desk or you’re in front of a computer all day, there are a few things you can do to prevent back pain from sitting in front of a computer.
First, make sure you’re using the right chair. You should avoid chairs with arms and backrests that curve inward or outward. Instead, look for an ergonomic chair with a straight backrest and armrests that are positioned at about the same height as your upper arms (not higher or lower) and where your wrists aren’t resting on the armrests.
Next, make sure you’re properly supporting your back by placing your elbows on the armrests when typing (or otherwise supporting yourself from behind) instead of putting them on top of the keyboard as most people do. If they’re too high up on the keyboard, they’ll put pressure on your wrists and elbows, which can cause injury over time if not addressed immediately.
Finally, take breaks every hour or two so that blood can return to your arms and legs (as well as all those parts of your body that get sore when you sit around all day). If possible, move around while working—especially between periods of intense concentration or creativity.
If you stick to these rules, it would prevent you from having back pain due to prolonged sitting.
