How to Identify and Treat Clubfoot in the First Year of Life

One of the most common disabilities in children is clubfoot, and it is the leading cause of ambulatory care among infants. It occurs when the foot is turned inwards, causing it to curl up like a club.

Clubfoot is a condition that can be treated by early intervention and early diagnosis. However, if left untreated, it can lead to permanent problems such as arthritis, bone deformities, and respiratory disorders.

Identifying Clubfoot in Your Child

There are several signs that may indicate your child has a problem with their foot:

The foot appears curved or turned inward.

The foot is pointed or rounded at the end closest to the body (this is called pes planus).

The ankle is rotated outward (talipes) or inward (talipes varus).

Sometimes only one foot will be affected; other times both feet will show signs of clubfoot.

Treating Club Foot

It’s a common misconception that you can’t treat clubfoot in the first year of life. The truth is, it’s very possible! In fact, your child’s treatment plan should begin as soon as they’ve been diagnosed with clubfoot.

If you’re going to use surgery to treat your child’s club foot, then you’ll also need to schedule your surgery date at least six months before this date. This will give the surgeon enough time to perform the surgery and make sure everything goes smoothly.

If you’ve decided on conservative care for your child’s club foot, then there are several options available for treatment:

-Conservative Treatment

-Steroid Injections (SIS)

-Tibial Nerve Blockade (TNB)

-Operative Surgery.

Clubfoot can vary in severity among individuals and in time of onset, so no two cases are the same. Fortunately, most babies with clubfoot have successful surgical treatments and only rarely require a brace or a walker.
